Boxing Gym

Boxing is a combat sport in which two people, usually wearing protective gloves, throw punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time in a boxing ring. Our boxing gym is state of the art with all the essential equipment and a great trainer. It is a devastating striking art that blends techniques such as jabs straight punches, hook to head and body and many more.

Boxing And The Body

Boxing is a sport that only uses the arms for striking. The use of legs however are just as important and used to get out of harm’s way. It may seem simple to only use your fists when fighting an opponent, but there are many different styles and moves that make up the sport of boxing. Boxing Techniques You Will Learn

STANCE

There are two stances you will have the option to use in boxing. An Orthodox stance which your left foot is your lead or the Southpaw stance which is right foot forward. Southpaws are usually left handed although this isn’t always true, it just depends on what stance the fighter feels natural with.

Boxing Punches  

Jab – The most important punch in boxing is the jab. It’s a punch that is throw with the lead hand from a stance positive. It’s weak as far as power is concerned, however it allows set up. In addition it also allows distance and escape from opponent.

Cross – A cross is a straight punch thrown from the back hand from a the boxer’s stance. A punch that is straight line and covers a good distance.

Hook – The hook is a semi-circular punch that is aimed to land at your opponents side. A powerful punch that often catches your opponent of guard. Therefore increases chance of knockdown.

Uppercut – An uppercut punch comes upward and is usually used when your opponent puts their head too low. Great power but risky to throw.

Overhand – The overhand is a punch thrown with your back hand and travels over your head in a looping fashion. It’s a wide and dangerous punch that requires good timing to land because it’s easier to see this punch coming from a distance.

 

Boxing Gym Defensive Tactics In St Pete

  • Footwork – At our boxing gym you will learn footwork to avoid punches. Speed of the feet to escape attack  requires a lot of energy.
  • Slipping – To slip a punch you need to have good reflexes. It involves you turning your hips and shoulders slightly to avoid a punch coming towards you.
  • Bobbing and Weaving – Moving your head sideways and bending your knees to evade incoming punches. In addition to throwing punches after this move.
  • Blocking and Parrying – Blocking requires that you take punches on the shoulders and arms.
  • Clinching / Holding –Clinching involves getting in close to your opponent and then tie up their arms so that they can’t throw any punches. Helps when you have been hurt.
